UAE ministers will be participating at the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly next week with other members of the international community. The session is aimed at advancing solutions to pressing global challenges, including COVID-19, climate change, digital divide, and gender inequality. This year, the event will take place in a hybrid format including both in-person and virtual meetings to boost participation of all members.
As per a WAM report, Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, will lead the UAE delegation at the event. The delegation will also begin preparation for the UAE’s two-year term on the UN Security Council which is starting in January 2022.
Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, expressed UAE's robust commitment to improve cooperation on global health, promote gender equality, build resilience to climate change and harness the potential of innovation of peace as part of its UN Security Council membership,
"With the enormous strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, the UAE believes that this is a key moment to heed the Secretary-General’s call to 'Build Back Better'," she added.
Reportedly, the UAE delegation will work towards ensuring an inclusive and sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic along with vaccine equity for all sections of the community. In addition, the UAE delegation will work towards strengthening global food systems, developing affordable and clean energy solutions, and ending proliferation of nuclear weapons.
The UAE will deliver its national statement at the general debate of the UN General Assembly on September 27, 2021.
World leaders and representatives from international institutions gather at the annual high-level week of the UN General Assembly to conduct meetings and discussions on pressing global challenges. This year, Minister Al Hashimy will be accompanied in for in-person meetings in New York by Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy for Climate Change and Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of State; and Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State.
Virtual meetings will saw the participation of Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment; Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth; Mariam Almheiri, Minister of State for Food and Water Security; Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Teleworking Applications; and Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of State.
The virtual meetings will also be attended by Yacoub Al Hosani, Assistant Minister for International Organisations and Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister for International Development from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
