UAE reopens schools, presses institutions to strictly follow safety measures and protocols

Students return to school starting today – in the Emirates – education

On Sunday, students attended school for the first time in months. The UAE government reopened schools across nation but only for the grades three to six. While students in rest of the grades in both public or private schools would stick to the distance education. Government said that they would open high school for pupils in four weeks' time, either in September or October.

In Abu Dhabi primary schools would open from Sunday, where as in Sharjah schools would resume its functions in two weeks.

In Dubai, authorities allowed all schools to open from Sunday, where as the Private schools said that they would open their gates for their students on Tuesday. The authorities said that Private schools would be able to operate only after subjecting all school personnel to a (Covid 19) examination.

Last week, the authorities conducted Covid-19 tests of teachers, school staff and bus drivers across the country in a major health drive to prevent the spread of infection.

“Every effort is being made to try to make it as smooth and safe as possible," said Darren Gale, principal of Horizon International School, an independent school based on British curriculum in Dubai.

As the school restarts functioning on Sunday, Gale added, "We rely on community spirit and everybody reading the information and the literature. Naturally, there are some tweaks that we need to make. There's no such thing as a perfect system. But generally it's gone very, very well this morning."

Some schools said that on the first day they only focused on getting children acquainted with all precautionary measures. To make the entire process interesting some even introduced a one-day course wherein students would receive a "coronavirus diploma" at the end of the first day, as a mark that they understand safety procedures.

The Ministry of Education confirmed that the schools need to ensure all the safety procedures and protocols are followed before resuming the operation of educational facilities during the pandemic, and to facilitate the safe return of students. As per the reports there are about a total of 1.11 million students enrolled in public and private schools combined nationwide and the number of students in government schools is 281,000, out of which 128,000 reside in Abu Dhabi, 29,000 in Dubai, and 42,000 in Sharjah.

Besides government declaring the reopening of schools, it would still be largely parents’ choice to decide whether to send their children to school or to continue with e-learning at home for now.
