In its latest editorial, Gulf News stated that scientists and medical experts worldwide are scrambling efforts to collect and analyse all relevant data to understand the impact of the new Coronavirus variant Omicron.
On Sunday, the paper underlined that Omicron appears to be more contagious than previous strains of COVID-19. Amid rising concerns over the surge of COVID-19 infections due to Omicron in several countries, there is some good news that there is growing evidence suggesting that the new variant does not have the same severe effect as other strains of the virus such as Delta. The paper affirmed that the level of infection is significantly less and the rate of hospitalisation has been far lower than other earlier variants in comparison.
"There is reassurance that the COVID-19 vaccines distributed previously are highly effective against Omicron, particularly if people have received a booster jab," the daily added.
In the UAE, vaccination rates are among the highest globally and the authorities are ensuring all possible measures to limit the impact of the Omicron COVID-19 variant. UAE authorities have already implemented relevant safety measures such as putting limits on the participants' capacity in indoor and outdoor events along with reinforcing social distancing protocols. The authorities are also strictly inspecting public compliance with safety measures to protect community members against the spread of the virus.
"It is the UAE’s commitment to fight Coronavirus that we are still free to mingle and gather at events such as Expo 2020 Dubai, where the world is visiting to see our nation’s vision for the future," the paper added in its editorial.
In accordance with the safety measures, the UAE has been gradually resuming economic activities in the country. The Dubai Airport has become fully-operational for the public along with malls and business centres. At Dubai International Airport, all terminals, concourses, lounges, restaurants, and retail outlets are also fully operational for public use. The UAE has shown increased business confidence and there has been a higher demand for international air travel.
"All this provides reasons for cautious optimism. Yes, we are doing good. But let’s keep our guard up too. We’ve come too far to be complacent now," the paper asserted.
To maintain this accomplishment, it is critical that community members continue their compliance with safety measures during the holiday season and festive activities such as New Years' celebrations. Adhering to precautionary measures such as wearing of face masks, regular hand washing and maintaining social distancing will not only help in protecting oneself against the virus, but others as well as family, friends and colleagues, the Dubai-based daily further stated.
"These practices are non-negotiable for your own and others well-being. It is upon us to enjoy the season without the interruption of sickness," it said.
In conclusion, the paper underlined the significance of COVID-19 booster vaccination as the best deterrent against Omicron. The authorities have been urging eligible community members to receive their booster vaccine doses to enhance fight against Omicron.
"Early research proved that booster doses are the best deterrent against Omicron. The jab is available near you. Don’t hesitate to take it," the daily concluded.
