UAE doctors advise public to use surgical masks, avoid cloth masks

In view of the rising cases of COVID-19 in countries across the world, UAE doctors are advising the public to wear 3-layer surgical masks instead of fabric face coverings for improved protection against the virus. Health officials have stressed on avoiding cloth masks made with cotton and opting for surgical, KN95 or N95 masks, particularly in public places.

Speaking with the media, Dr Sweta Prakash Adatia, medical director and neurologist at RAK Hospital, discussed a study that demonstrated the benefit of surgical masks over cloth masks. While cloth masks offer just 47 percent protection, surgical masks, KN95, and N95 offer 95 percent protection. She further advised against wearing single-valve or double-valve masks as they can result in spreading the contagion.

According to Dr Mohamed Zedan, family medicine specialist at NMC Royal Hospital in Sharjah, specialised masks are the most effective against COVID-19.

"Wearing tight masks like N95 and KN95 are the best steps to stop the infection spread," he said.

While N95 masks are 95 percent effective against COVID-19, doctors also advised against using them on a regular basis. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also suggests that such masks for frontline health workers for better protection against infection.

For regular use, 3-ply surgical masks are considered more suitable as they provide good protection. These masks are used by doctors in a clinical setting and operation rooms.

In addition, doctors also urge the public to wear the masks correctly to cover the mouth and nose

"Masks should have proper fitting so that it covers your mouth and nose. The size of the mask, the way it is worn and tightness of the mask is very important," the health specialist added.

It is important that the inner layer of the mask is not exposed and is handled with care. Furthermore, the same mask should not be used beyond its prescribed limit.

"N95 can be used for eight hours. These masks can even be sterilised and reused two or three more times," Dr Adatia added.

She added that masks should be the moment they become soggy, which is approximately after eight to 10 hours.
