The UAE government is ensuring all possible efforts to strengthen the attractiveness of the midwifery profession. According to Dr Mohammad Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), the UAE authorities are providing all forms of support to midwives to enhance their rights and attract more people to the profession.
Speaking on the occasion of International Day of the Midwife on May 5, Al Olama hailed midwives as an indispensable part of the nursing system in the country and an essential pillar to improving the quality of healthcare services provided by the health sector.
Furthermore, Al Olama underlined the UAE's commitment to supporting midwives and nursing cadres. In line with this agenda, the UAE organised a midwifery conference for the first time in the Middle East.
The conference was aimed at providing an important opportunity for midwives and professionals in the field to exchange experiences and knowledge along with exploring the future development of healthcare services provided by midwives.
At the same time, the UAE launched the National Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery in order to promote the position of nursing and midwifery in health policies in the country.
He stressed the special focus paid by the Ministry of Health and Prevention to support and strengthen the policies and efforts of the authorities to empower midwives in the country. As part of this special focus, the UAE has rolled out several initiatives and programmes to enhance the attractiveness of the nursing and midwifery profession.
The authorities continue to develop the skills and potential of nursing and midwifery staff by engaging in evidence-based research and practice in accordance with national health priorities.
The MoHAP undersecretary praised the International Day of the Midwife as a global occasion highlighting the strategic importance of the midwifery profession and the key role played by the staff in promoting reproductive health and childbirth in the UAE and countries across the world.
The occasion also represents a significant annual platform to combine international efforts to grow and develop the midwifery profession. The UAE authorities continue to explore new opportunities to provide necessary support and assistance to midwives, further enrich their expertise, strengthen their scientific and practical knowledge and enhance their ability to provide health care services in line with the best international standards designated in the field.
