The UAE authorities have allowed media companies to resume the distribution of newspapers and magazines across public places such as cafes, restaurants, hotels, and duty-free stores in the country. The decision was taken with the aim of supporting the publishing sector in its role of creating awareness about culture and knowledge in society.
Speaking about the move, Dr Rashid Khalfan Al Nuaimi, executive director of the Media Regulatory Office, stated that the decision of lifting the restrictions on the distribution of newspapers and magazines in public places was taken in line with the national strategy to promote the recovery of key sectors of the country, including the media, as well as mitigate the repercussions of the pandemic.
He further praised the spirit of support and cooperation shown by the country's distribution companies during the pandemic. He expressed delight in resuming the distribution of newspapers and magazines in public places in cooperation with relevant partners to boost the revitalisation of the sector.
“Today marks an important milestone in overcoming the pandemic and continuing the process of cultural development and enriching knowledge in Emirati society," Al Nuaimi added.
He explained that the newspapers, magazines and the publications sector have witnessed significant growth in the past three years prior to the pandemic. As per reports, the total number of periodicals distributed between 2017-2019 reached around 107,808, out of which 8,984 titles were from the art and cultural sectors.
Al Nuaimi pointed out that these publications are rolled out in several languages including French, Hindi, Chinese, German and Italian. Notably, English and Arabic have remained the prominent languages of the publications.
