Amid the efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre "Tadweer" completed 1.8 million hours of disinfection work in the emirate from March 2020 till November 8, 2020.

A 972-strong task force was deployed by the authority for the job. This task force consisted disinfection specialists, supervisors, administrators, engineers, technicians, and cleaners who worked everyday for 10 hours. They cleaned and sanitized more than 220 areas and neighborhoods in the emirate during the process. In total, the disinfection process covered 485,000 kilometers across the emirate.

During the drive, a total of 2.08 million liters of disinfectants as well as 250 million liters of water were reportedly used by the task force. They travelled across the emirate in 136 vehicles fitted with the latest technology, particularly for the field operations.

Speaking over the development, Tadweer director general Dr Salem Al Kaabi affirmed that the centre actively participated in the national disinfection programme and helped in achieving positive results amid the pandemic crisis. Ever since the COVID-19 outbreak struck the emirate, Tadweer has initiated prompt action to address the crisis. Proactive action helped the Tadweer's field and administrative teams to successfully carry out the disinfection operations in a well-planned manner, he added.

"The success of this drive validates our instrumental role in protecting the environment, health and safety of the community amid COVID-19 pandemic,” Dr Al Kaabi said.

He expressed pride in the significant role played by the Tadweer's teams throughout the disinfection programme as it demonstrated the organisation's dedication and commitment towards protecting the UAE community amid the pandemic crisis.

"Such efforts articulate Tadweer’s strategic objectives of ensuring a clean, safe, healthy, and sustainable environment for all,” he noted.

A key government entity, Tadweer is responsible to carry out all activities related to the development of waste management services in Abu Dhabi. Its services include collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of waste in a safe, well-organized and economical manner in the emirate. At the same time, Tadweer is also responsible for carrying out pest control drive, creating awareness among the communities about the importance of protecting the environment and encouraging them to adopt eco-friendly lifestyle to lead sustainable development.
