New directive reveals that Covid-19 patients must refer to doctors before fasting

The holy month of Ramadan is here and that has brought a lot of concerns for people with regards to fasting during the coronavirus pandemic. Many are concerned about the possibilities of immunity hampering when nutritional value is concerned or some also feel that Covid-19 patients will have a tougher time.

The doctors talked to the Khaleej Times and said that Covid-19 patients must consult physicians before Ramadan fasting and only when the patients are asymptomatic are they allowed to undertake religious practices.

This was asserted by Dr. Muhammed Shafeeq, a specialist in pulmonology at Aster Hospital, Al Qusais who said that as most of the religious authorities have already said that for a person suffering from health issues, it is better to refrain from fasting.

However, he also said that for those who are asymptomatic to Covid-19, it is not compulsory that they refrain from fasting as there are no reported adverse effects. He also added, “They must be self-aware, and, if they develop any symptoms or changes in physical condition, they should discuss it with a doctor.”

Dr. Shafeeq said that those who have any prolonged disease or those who belong to a moderate or severe category of Covid-19 patients are at the risk of sudden dehydration if they last. He noted that such people are at risk of sudden acute deterioration. ‘Covid-19 patients need hydration,’ he stressed.

Another pulmonologist, Dr. Ali Anwar Mohammed noted that it is not advised to fast when you are infected with the virus. He added that one has to be hydrated at all times when ill. The impact of Covid-19 will reduce the immunity and lead to considerable weakness which can further aggravate when you fast,” he said.

A specialist of internal medicine at Burjeel Speciality Hospital in Sharjah, Dr. Sadeer Jamil Samara, also said that those who exhibit severe post-covid-19 symptoms must also be very careful while fasting. The doctor added that if they are suffering from other health-related conditions like diseases of heart, kidney, and liver, should also consider avoiding fasting during Ramadan.

It was also noted that there is no reason for them to not fast if they are not showing any symptoms of health conditions. The healthcare sector revealed certain directives saying that it would prevent them from covid.

They said that patients must follow a healthy lifestyle during Ramadan. Along with that proper intake of nutrients must also be ensured by consumption of plenty of green leafy vegetables and unprocessed food items.

Their sleep cycle must also be ensured. They must complete seven to eight hours of sleep per day to obtain normal immunity. All of these measures must be followed along with proper covid-19 guidelines like avoiding crowded places. Instructions by doctors should also be adhered and wearing of masks and practicing social distancing must be ensured.
