Amana Healthcare is starting its special rehabilitation program for two-year-old children in the UAE to control the developing concern of post-coronavirus complications, also known as long-covid.
In 2020, Mubadala Health established a unique post-coronavirus rehabilitation plan to cover ICU recovery and ventilator weaning, home or tele/video recuperation, specialized inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation.
A physical examination is done to decide if all four aspects of the program are required, after which proper treatment is given to help the patient return to pre-disease levels of activities.
As per consultant paediatric pulmonologist and sleep medicine practitioner Dr Rizwana Popatia, "While numerous kids experience mild, moderate or no symptoms of covid and require no medical treatment for it. Some children develop post- covid complications that last for several weeks or months, which in medical terms we call long covid.
As per experimental assessments published by the UK's Office of National Statistics in January 2021, around 12.9% of kids from age group 2 to 11 years; 14.5% of those somewhere in the age group 12 to 16; and 17.1% of youth from 17 to 24 years have yet felt coronavirus symptoms for five weeks after the underlying onset.
Dr Popatia added that in most pediatric patients, we have observed that their symptoms differ from adults while affecting the respiratory, neurological, and psychological aspects and physical fatigue. If these symptoms remained untreated, then these post-Covid-19 complexities could worsen."
The post covid complications consist; shortness of breath, eating and drinking issues, extreme fatigue, difficulty to do daily chores, lack of concentration, anxiety, palpitation, Myalgia, chest pain, sadness, depression and much more. One or more of these symptoms could trouble post covid patients for weeks or months.
Long covid could impact kids and adults' daily activity and schooling, hamper learning, speech, and lack of interest.
Recently, the only covid vaccine approved for children from the age group 3-17 was the Sinopharm vaccine, while Pfizer shots were available for children above 12 years of age.
On Sunday night, the UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention has approved the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 inoculation for emergency use for those aged 5-11 years. Medical professionals across the nation are welcoming the decision.
