Emirates Airlines has now shifted its bus fleet to biofuel, taking a significant step forward into its environmental commitment towards reducing carbon emissions.
About a third of its bus fleet is being used for the transportation of air service crew members in Dubai. The company that runs the fleet is the Al-Ejdania Company that has committed to operate all buses using the biodiesel provided by the UAE company, Neutral Fuels.
The bus fleet covers an average distance of 700,000 kilometers per month. With the use of biofuels, the aspects of route planning and scheduling of ground movements will see more maximized transport efficiency and reduced emissions.
It is worth noting that the use of biofuels actually reduces the emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. The shift is a easy one, without any need of modification to the diesel engines. Additionally, this kind of fuel use actually reduced the wear and tear of the engines due to its excellent lubricating properties. It also works as a cleaner in fuel systems and removes dust deposits, which improves efficiency and reduces maintenance costs.
With a shift to biofuels, the CO2 emissions savings alone are estimated at 75,000 kg per year. The CEO of “Neutral Fuels” Karl W. Felder praised the success of the Emirates Airline initiative and the “sentimental”, noting that it is in line with the energy-related sustainability goals that the UAE has committed to achieving by 2050.
Moving ahead with its clean bus initiative, Emirates Airlines is also experimenting with the use of electric buses at Dubai International Airport to transport crew members between the terminal and aircraft.
