Landmark Group has donated Dh5 million to the Jalila Foundation in Dubai to support the A’awen’ diabetes treatment programme of the organisation. The donation will be made over the next five years as part of Landmark Group's flagship social initiative ‘Beat Diabetes’.
Jalila Foundation's A’awen (‘support’ in Arabic) is aimed at providing financial assistance to UAE citizens and residents who are suffering from life-threatening illnesses and are not able to afford access to quality healthcare. With the programme, the Foundation seeks to alleviate the financial burden on patients in treatment of serious illnesses.
Besides the ‘Beat Diabetes’ initiative, Landmark Group also be raising funds across its network of brand outlets in the UAE for Al Jalila Foundation’s diabetes research and treatment programmes. To extend maximum support to the cause, the Group will equate the donations raised in stores dirham-for-dirham, double the amount collected and continue to do to help people in the future.
How the funds will help?
The funds raised by Landmark Group will provide financial assistance to diabetic patients in need. Al Jalila Foundation’s A’awen committee which consists of subject matter experts and physicians wil conduct a review for patients to understand their needs. Al Jalila Foundation works with its healthcare partners to address medical needs of the patients and guide them with relevant treatment plans. The Foundation will also provide a report on the progress of the fundraising initiative and its effect on the community.
Renuka Jagtiani, Chairwoman and CEO of the Landmark Group, expressed the organisation;s commitment to continue the fight against diabetes for more than a decade in the UAE. The Group has a long-standing vision to enhance awareness related to disease. "Diabetes is a major cause of some of the world’s most debilitating health conditions and many patients facing financial hardships are unable to get the treatment they need. Our five-year pledge to the Al Jalila Foundation’s A’awen treatment programme is a vital step towards ensuring easier access to life-saving medical for those who need it," she added.
1.5 million deaths
Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, said that through its partnership with Landmark Group, the organisation has been able to make meaningful progress in diabetes research to improve patient treatment.
According to the WHO, at least 422 million people worldwide are suffering from diabetes, while 1.5 million deaths are reported due to diabetes each year. In this regard, Dr Al Olama called for an urgent action and collaboration to help people fight the illness.
"Investing in research will help us uncover relevant and innovative solutions to one of today’s most pressing healthcare challenges and we thank Landmark Group for its unwavering support and contribution to diabetes research, prevention and treatment," he added.
Beat Diabetes initiative
Since 2014, Landmark Group’s ‘Beat Diabetes’ initiative has raised and pledged more than Dh13 million to boost research and treatment for diabetes.
On November 14, the world marks Diabetes Day. On the occasion in 2021, Landmark Group hosted the 12th edition of its Beat Diabetes Walk to bring together more than 10,000 participants to raise awareness among the public about the health condition.
