The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has directed all hospitals in the emirate to suspend non-essential surgery procedures for a month. As per a decree issued by the DHA, the measure will be applicable to all licensed hospitals and surgical clinics. It will come into immediate effect until February 19. The decision has been taken by the Authority in line with the efforts to ensure the highest quality of medical care to all members of the community across the emirate.
Taking to Twitter on Thursday, the Dubai Media Office directed all DHA-licensed hospitals and day surgical centres to put elective therapeutic surgeries on hold until February 19. The Dubai Media Office has affirmed that the decision has been taken to maintain the highest level of health and safety of the community. It will also assist the authorities in better handling COVID-19 cases and proactive preparedness of health facilities.
"This decision is aimed at ensuring that the most critical health issues are prioritised," the Office added.
It further noted the measure applies only to those therapeutic surgeries that require general anaesthesia or deep sedation. However, medical emergencies that require elective surgeries have been allowed by the Authority.
These surgeries can include fractures and corrective orthopaedic procedures, stone and urological stent removals, neurosurgical procedures, cardiological and radiological interventions, and emergency procedures in general surgery. At the same time, gynaecology, ophthalmology, obstetrics, paediatrics, and other specialities have also been permitted.
According to a circular issued by the DHA on the matter, the decision could be extended beyond February 19, if necessary.
