UAE's authorities are anticipating that the COVID-19 vaccine may need to be taken every year. The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) recently posted a video in which Dr Farida Al Hosani, official spokesperson for the UAE Health Sector, explained that the vaccine may be required to be taken annually, similar to the seasonal influenza shot.
However, she further noted that the situation is currently being studied by specialists and authorities. She also underlined that the efficacy of the vaccine may differ from person to person depending on their immunity system.
''Vaccination rounds began less than a year ago and it will take some time... It is difficult to determine the exact period of immunity provided by the vaccine at this stage,” she said in the video.
The UAE has been administering influenza vaccines across the country every year.
Recently, the UAE health authorities authorised Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine booster doses for residents. Authorities have encouraged people to take the third dose of the Sinopharm vaccine six months after their second dose, with priority to the elderly and those suffering from chronic diseases.
Earlier this week, Dr Al Hosani underlined that the decision was taken after a careful assessment conducted by the health authorities. She explained that the additional dose will offer increased immunity against the new strains of Coronavirus.
"Vaccine booster dose is an additional dose given after receiving the first two. This is taken in order to boost the immunity against the virus, specifically for the elderly and those with chronic diseases," the official added.
