Abu Dhabi's Department of Community Development (DCD) marked World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 to raise awareness about active participation of persons with autism the society.
This year, World Autism Awareness Day is being observed to address inclusive quality education for every individual as part of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). The goal focuses on ensuring the provision of inclusive and equitable quality education as well as promoting lifelong learning opportunities to enhance people's quality of life and reduce inequalities.
Speaking about the occasion, Dr Layla Abdulaziz Al Hyas, executive director of the Social Monitoring and Innovation Sector at DCD, underlined various efforts made by the Department in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Strategy for People of Determination to empower persons with autism. Dr Al Hyas regarded persons with autism as an integral part of society who have full rights to lead a dignified life and have access to quality education and suitable job opportunities.
She affirmed that World Autism Awareness Day is observed as an opportunity to highlight autism disorder and spread community awareness on the importance of accepting and supporting persons with autism.
"They are a part of human diversity. It is the responsibility of society and all entities to ensure their access to equitable rights and opportunities in health, education, work and community participation," she added.
She further underlined the need for raising awareness on the need to ensure early detection and diagnosis of children with autism, adding that the earlier the diagnosis, the greater the prospects are to carry out an early intervention.
Dr Al Hyas also stressed the need for addressing and demystifying false information and stereotypes about autism along with supporting families to help their children and provide them with relevant guidance to monitor early signs of autism. It will further strengthen the chances of ensuring early intervention.
